Ben Stern and Sharon Parker-Lines take over with ambitions to drive sector growth
In his new role as Chair of UKspace, Ben Stern has issued a call for action, saying “It is a privilege to take on the role of Chair of UKspace at a defining moment for Britain’s space sector. Space is fundamental to national security, economic growth, scientific leadership and everyday life across the UK. Britain has the talent, innovation and capability to be a leading space nation and a globally trusted partner. My priority will be to ensure industry and government work together to turn strategic ambition into sustained national capability and commercial success.”
Ben, who is a Key Account Manager for Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd, has been Vice-Chair of UKspace since September 2024, working alongside outgoing Chair Doug Liddle.
He added: “The UK must move faster in turning innovation into operational capability, resilient infrastructure and export growth. From satellite communications and Earth observation to launch, defence and downstream applications, our sector can deliver strategic advantage for the UK and its allies. The opportunities created by dual-use technologies and space security can drive productivity, investment and high-value jobs across the UK. I will champion a competitive, investable and export-focused space economy that strengthens both national security and economic prosperity. Together, we can ensure the UK remains at the forefront of the global space economy and a leader in the technologies that will shape the future.”
Working alongside Ben to champion the UK space industry will be Sharon Parker-Lines, who takes over as UKspace’s new Vice-Chair. Sharon is Deputy Managing Director and SVP Business Operations, Government and Regulatory Affairs at Astroscale in the UK.
Sharon said: “I’m delighted to have been elected as UKspace Vice-Chair and look forward to working with Ben, the UKspace team and our members as we build on the organisation’s strong foundations. The UK space sector has world-class capability, but we need to speak with greater confidence, clarity and unity about what we can achieve.
“As Vice-Chair, I want to help UKspace be a stronger, more modern and more influential voice for our industry, bringing together primes, SMEs, start-ups and innovators behind a clear vision for the future. Together, we can strengthen our credibility with government, champion the value our sector delivers and help solidify the UK’s position as a leading global space nation. There is a huge opportunity ahead for our sector, and I’m looking forward to working with colleagues across the space community to make sure the UK’s space story is heard loud and clear.”
As he handed over the reins, Doug Liddle said: “The space sector has evolved radically in recent years and there are substantial opportunities and challenges ahead at home and globally. Ben and Sharon are strong, dynamic and passionate advocates for our sector and I’m excited to see them take on the leadership of UKspace. I wish them both well.”
Colin Baldwin, UKspace’s Executive Director, welcomed the new leadership team, saying: “One of UKspace’s core strengths is our industrial leadership. I look forward to working with Ben and Sharon as they take on their new roles – and would like to thank Doug Liddle, who will now take on the role of UKspace Treasurer, for his leadership over the last two years. I’d also like to thank and pay tribute to John Hanley who, after six years of service as Vice-Chair, Chair and Treasurer, is now stepping down as an elected official of UKspace.”
