BioOrbit Ltd is a pioneering UK-based biotech Contract Development and Manufacturing Organisation (CDMO) building the world’s first scalable platform for the crystallisation of biologic drugs in microgravity. Founded in 2023, BioOrbit is tackling a critical challenge in pharmaceutical manufacturing: creating high-concentration, low-viscosity biologic formulations suitable for subcutaneous delivery.

The advantages of protein crystallisation in microgravity are well established. In space, the absence of gravity-induced convection and sedimentation allows for the formation of larger, more uniform crystals. This was powerfully demonstrated in NASA’s landmark study on pembrolizumab (Keytruda), which showed significantly improved crystal quality in low Earth orbit. While this validated the scientific potential, a commercially scalable solution has remained out of reach…until now.

By combining rapid advancements in affordable launch, re-entry technologies, and emerging space infrastructure with BioOrbit’s proprietary crystallisation platform, orbital biomanufacturing is now commercially viable. BioOrbit’s autonomous hardware enables continuous production at scale, from grams to hundreds of kilograms annually.

This breakthrough unlocks the potential for subcutaneous delivery of complex biologics making treatment faster, less invasive, and more accessible. BioOrbit is positioned to lead the next era of pharmaceutical innovation as the world’s first CDMO dedicated to in-space drug manufacturing.
