Steve Welch22 October 2015 – The Space Innovation Growth Strategy team are pleased to announce that Dr Steve Welch of the Knowledge Transfer Network has been appointed as interim director for the Space IGS.

The Space IGS is a partnership between industry, government and academia which is working to develop, grow and exploit new space related opportunities.

“The UK space industry is already worth £11.8 billion and has been growing by an average of 8.6% year-on-year since the start of the IGS in 2010. We are really pleased that Steve Welch will be leading the team as we build on the IGS team success so far,” says Paul Flanagan, UK Space.

Before moving into knowledge transfer, Steve had a lengthy career at UCL’s Mullard Space Science Laboratory where he worked on instrumentation for notable space missions of NASA, ISAS and the European Space Agency.

Steve explains: “Space is already important to the UK economy, but there is still substantial room for growth by exploiting new export markets and by getting more out of the space assets we already have. The IGS team is a great partnership in a remarkable industry, and I am looking forward to being able to bring the cross-sector reach of KTN to this role.”

“Innovate UK welcomes Steve’s appointment. The IGS is at an exciting stage of evolution and Innovate UK is pleased to have been able to help with the timely establishment of the KTN Space Group and now looks forward to working with Steve and the Space sector to deliver on the ambitious goals set out in the 2014 Space Growth Action Plan.” Tim Just, Head of Space, Innovate UK.
