SUMMARY:Space Stories - The First Child Astronaut
DESCRIPTION:Author Sue Palmer will be talking about Michael May\, the main character in May’s Moon and his attempt to become the first child astronaut. \nSue will look at what it takes to become an astronaut and how space can benefit us all on earth. Come and share your knowledge of space\, have a go at Sue’s quiz and be in with a chance of winning a prize. \nOpen to children and adults. Adults can enjoy a complimentary alcoholic beverage! \nAbout Sue Palmer: Based in South Oxfordshire\, Sue writes adventure stories for 8 to 12-year-olds. Her May’s Moon Trilogy tells the story of 13 year old Michael May’s dream of becoming the first child astronaut. At it’s heart\, it’s a story about chasing dreams and what happens when those dreams start to become a reality. Sue runs workshops for schools\, festivals and bookshops\, weaving the space research she carried out for her writing into her fictional stories. Creating her May’s Moon adventures has given Sue a real interest in past\, current and future space exploration and she loves meeting astronauts.

SUMMARY:Until the end of time
DESCRIPTION:The Universe is astoundingly vast both in time and in space\, and yet appears to be governed by simple\, elegant\, mathematical laws. Guided by these laws\, world-renowned physicist Brian Greene will take us on a journey from our most refined understanding of the universe’s beginning to the closest science can take us to the very end. He will explore how life and mind emerged from the initial chaos\, and how our minds\, in coming to understand their own impermanence\, seek in different ways to give meaning to experience: in narrative\, myth\, religion\, creative expression\, science\, the quest for truth\, and our longing for the timeless. He will show it is within these pursuits that we experience profound wonder and create great beauty\, even as the universe and all it contains is destined for decay. \nThrough a series of nested stories that explain distinct but interwoven layers of reality – particles to planets\, consciousness to creativity\, matter to meaning – Greene will provide us with a clearer sense of how we came to be\, a finer picture of where we are now\, and a firmer grasp of where we are headed. With this grand tour of the Universe\, beginning to end\, we can all understand and appreciate our fleeting but utterly exquisite moment in the cosmos. \nTicket prices: \n\nStandard £16\nConcession £10\nRi Members and Ri Patrons £7\n\nFull details and booking
