Innovation in space

This latest event in the Academy’s Innovation in… series of events will showcase a selection of some of the most recent advances in space technologies and space-enabled services, focussng on innovations that have successfully reached market or are expected to in the next 5-10 years. Professor Sir Martin Sweeting FRS FREng, Executive Chairman of Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd, will deliver the introductory presenation as well as chair the afternoon. Topics will include small satellites, telecommunications using satellite constellations, earth observation and access to space. A panel discussion with key leaders in the sector will explore the future for space innovation, and the wider social, political and economic issues. Speakers and panellists confirmed so far include:

  • Dr Tony Azzarelli, One Web, who will be speaking on innovations in the use of satellite constellations for telecommunications.
  • Professor Paul Monks, Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry and Earth Observation Science, University of Leicester
  • Catherine Mealing-Jones, Director for Growth, UK Space Agency
  • Paul Febvre, Chief Technology Officer, Satellite Applications Catapult
  • Colin Paynter, Managing Director, Airbus Space and Defence Ltd
