This leaflet was produced to support a joint event by the Parliamentary Space Committee, Globe International, and ACOPS, at a time when the UK Parliament considers the Government's Marine Bill. This landmark Bill places significant need on improved monitoring, to understand how the marine environment functions, how it changes over time, and whether proposed measures within the Bill are working. Satellites perform a vital and sometimes unique role in marine monitoring, offering gradual, global, accurate data records over the last 25 years of key indicators including sea surface roughness, temperature, currents, rising sea levels, wave height, ice cover and algal blooms and phytoplankton. The event drew on experts from across the UK policy, science and engineering communities, including Professor Bob Watson, DEFRA Chief Scientist, and from the UK space industry Professor Mick Johnson, Director of the Centre for Earth Observation Instrumentation.
